As October rolls around, the off-road season is in full swing. It’s the time when you can really push your Jeep Wrangler to its limits and take it onto the terrain it was made for. It’s fun, it’s challenging, and it’s a national pastime here in the UAE.
But before you swap tarmac for trails, you’ll need to prepare your Jeep for the off-road season. The last thing you want is a breakdown spoiling your fun or, more seriously, putting you in danger. If you’ve been driving on asphalt all summer, it’s crucial that you take a little time to check that your Jeep is ready to take on more adventurous terrain.
The first thing to do is to check your tires. You may have swapped your usual all-terrain tires for more road-biased options during the summer. If that’s the case, then now is the time to swap them back. Ensure that your tires are in tip-top condition as a puncture is the most likely thing to (quite literally) stop you in your tracks. You’ll also need to ensure that they are correctly inflated for the terrain you’ll be taking on.
Our top tip: Ensure you take an Air Compressor with you so that you can inflate your tires once you’ve finished off-roading and are taking your Jeep back onto tarmac.
And don’t forget to check the spare. There’s nothing worse than getting a flat tire and then finding that your spare is flat or damaged too! Some Jeep Wranglers are fitted with a locking wheel nut for the Spare Wheel – ensure that you know where it’s located in case you need to change the tire.
Essential Equipment – As well as an Air Compressor, other important items to take with you into the desert include a Recovery Rope, Soft Shackle, Gloves, a Shovel and a Tyre Deflator.
After a puncture, the most common reason for a breakdown is a flat battery. If you’re running extra lights for night-time driving, they can put quite a drain on a standard battery. Replace your usual battery with a heavy-duty option that can cope with extra demand from things like winches, spotlights and lightbars.
If you’re planning to tackle some seriously rough terrain, it may be wise to check that your suspension is in top condition. This is a job that’s best handled by professionals, as they have the specific equipment and the experience to check things like seals, springs and suspension units. Keep in mind that off-roading can be quite demanding, so it's worthwhile to dedicate some effort to ensure your Jeep's suspension can handle rugged trails.
